For more than a decade, the health care industry has been focusing on finding new ways to save money on prescriptions, as it seeks to make patients healthier. But the push for affordable medications has been fueled by the fear that doctors won’t prescribe them to their patients. Some doctors have come out strongly against this, but others are trying to get them on their feet again.

So what exactly is this industry trying to accomplish?

Pharmaceutical company Nexium is trying to make the most of a decade of savings on its prescriptions. Nexium has spent $1.9 billion on brand-name prescriptions since 2006, up from $1.7 billion in 2007. But there are still plenty of alternatives to the brand-name drug that Nexium is trying to make more affordable.

“There are some things that can be done to make a drug more affordable,” says Dr. Thomas J. M. Lusztaj, director of marketing for the company’s research and development division. “And we’re not going to change the way we treat people. We’re not going to change how we treat the world. We’re going to change the way people are paying for prescriptions.”

Maine-based AstraZeneca, which is the maker of AstraZeneca’s popular generic drug, is also trying to make a big mistake. When it launched its new drug, Prevnar 13 in October, a generic version of the cholesterol-lowering drug Nexium, AstraZeneca launched its generic version in the United States and Canada. But it will have to start by taking a prescription from its generic competitor. AstraZeneca will have to make the generic version, which will cost $12.99 per month.

So far, however, AstraZeneca has made little progress. The drug’s patents have expired, so it is not expected to go away anytime soon. But the generic is hoping that the new drug will have a similar effect to the AstraZeneca brand-name drug. Although the price of the generic has been relatively stable, the generic is hoping that it can begin to treat patients more quickly.

“There are other people who are going to have to be aware of these things,” says M. J. Andrews, president of the American Pharmacists Association. “But they’ll be able to say, ‘We’re not going to do that.’ And we’re not going to change what they’re doing.”

Maine-based AstraZeneca is not exactly sure that the generic version of Nexium will work. It has already spent about $500 million on Nexium. But the company is also trying to make a big mistake, M. Andrews says.

This isn’t the first time that the industry has been fighting for quick savings on new prescription drugs. In 2005, AstraZeneca agreed to pay the National Institutes of Health, which makes the heart drug digoxin. The drug was only available as a generic drug for about $5 per month, but it could be as high as $10 per month. Now, the drug is only available through a combination of generics, which would be much more expensive.

In fact, AstraZeneca is not going away. In the last three years, the company has spent more than $14 billion on prescriptions for heart disease and hypertension treatments, and the company is fighting to keep these costs under control. It has been trying to keep costs down and keep people taking the drug. But the price of the generic is too high. And it could take time to find the right generic for AstraZeneca.

In addition to the generic, AstraZeneca is trying to make the best of an existing one. But there is no clear answer for how quickly this may change. The only drug on the market that AstraZeneca is trying to make affordable is Nexium. But it is likely to take several more years to get its heart drug to the point that it is going to have to spend much more money.

“We’re trying to do something about it,” M. “We’re not going to change the way we treat people. We’re going to change the way people are paying for prescriptions.
